Toolkit makes installation of Palm OS applications easier; decreases support calls

Beiks LLC, one of the most prolific developers of software applications for handheld devices – with hundreds of titles currently available – has released a new version of its Pilot Catapult installation toolkit for Palm OS(r) software developers. Pilot Catapult 3.0 was designed to make the process of installing Palm OS applications easier and delivers some long-awaited features to developers.

Pilot Catapult is the first installation kit specifically developed for the needs of the Palm OS platform. It is small, robust, functional and easy-to-use. Designed to cover the most common cases of installing Palm OS software, it has become the install kit-of-choice for hundreds of Palm OS development and publishing companies.

“Pilot Catapult is the result of our having been in ‘the trenches’ of Palm OS software development for many years. We recognized our own need for an installation kit with a smaller footprint and yet stronger focus on the mobile application installation than what its chief rivals were offering,” said Bobby Kolev, president of Beiks LLC. “Pilot Catapult 3.0 is an excellent choice for software developers who want to focus on development by saving time, energy and money devoted to learning and using a generic installation tool. Pilot Catapult decreased our Web site data traffic by 30% while cutting the support calls by nearly 40%!”

With its simple drag-and-drop interface, developers who use Pilot Catapult have the ability to build professional installations of their Palm OS applications in less than five minutes. Better yet, they can automate the build process and have different language and feature builds made with a single click of the mouse.

Version 3.0 brings some long awaited features like targeting specific media on the handheld (RAM, CARD or CARD, RAM), significantly faster decompression, self-extracting file icon customization, enhanced component installation features and others. A unique new feature (offered “as is” in version 3.0) is the packaging of CAB files into user-friendly self-extracting files for users of the rival Windows Mobile platform (Pocket PC and Windows Smartphone).

Another tool Beiks has recently made available to Palm OS developers is its LexSpell spell-checking library. By incorporating LexSpell into word processing, email or other applications that produce text documents, a developer can provide their customers with the means to double-check the spelling of their messages before sharing them with colleagues.

Further information about Pilot Catapult 3.0 can be found at www.beiks.com/catapult. The Standard edition retails for US $99.00, while the Multilanguage edition is available for US$129.00. Individual language modules (French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German and Chinese) can be purchased for US$20.00 each. Beiks promises support for more language modules soon.
