Field Informatics LLC, a new software solution provider with expertise in ergonomics and healthcare, is about to launch their Ergonomic Assessment Library for the Palm.
The library contains a useful assortment of 13 ergonomic assessments that can be used as screening tools for conducting a job site analysis. Many of the checklists have been adapted for use on a handheld computer from paper checklists developed by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the US Army, and Washington State's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Just imagine conducting a job-site analysis on your handheld computer at the worksite! Within a few minutes after its completion, you will be printing, or sending by e-mail, a detailed report before leaving the site. Once and for all, replace pen and paper forms with the convenience and accuracy of handheld computing! All you need is a handheld computer running the Palm operating system (Palm OS 3.5), a printer with infrared capabilities (optional), and a Kodak PalmPix digital camera (optional). The library will be available for download from on-line distributors by the end of September 2001 at the nominal cost of $14.99.
A demonstration package containing 2 of the 13 ergonomic assessments found in the Field Informatics Ergonomic Assessment Library is available as a free download from their website(http://www.fieldinformatics.com/ergolibrary/ergodemo). It contains the Computer Workstation Checklist, modified from the guide, "Creating the Ideal Computer Workstation: A Step-by-Step Guide" developed by the Department of Defense Ergonomics Working Group, and the NIOSH Manual Lifting Formula, which is used to analyze lifting repetition, force, and posture in relationship to the lower back.
The complete Ergonomics Assessment Library is described in greater detail at their website. For ease of use, the checklists have been classified into three categories: General, Hazards, and NIOSH. The General category contains four checklists/evaluations: Demographics, Symptoms, Pain Areas, and Notes. The Hazard category contains three checklists: Performance, Physical Demands, and Work Area. The NIOSH category contains eight checklists: General Ergonomic, Risk Analysis, Computer Workstation Checklist, Hand tool Analysis Checklist, Ergonomics, Hazard Identification Checklist, NIOSH Revised Manual Lifting Formula, Materials Handling Checklist, Task Analysis Checklist, and the Workstation Checklist. Many of the evaluations in this category come from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), National Institute on Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) publication No. 97-117, "Elements of Ergonomics Programs: A Primer on Workplace Evaluations of Musculoskeletal Disorders".
