New guidelines issued on May 15 by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (as the Third Report of the Expert Panel of the National Cholesterol Education Program on Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Cholesterol in Adults (Adult Treatment Panel III, or ATP III) recommend some significant changes in the approach to detection, evaluation, and treatment of high blood cholesterol in adults. If put into practice, they could dramatically reduce heart disease in this country.
Busy practitioners who own a a Palm OS device can more quickly and easily put these new guidelines into practice with the new ATP III Guidelines Implementation Tool, developed by the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP).
Designed for use at the point of care, the interactive decision-making tool helps clinicians to do everything necessary for implementing the guidelines, from calculating a patient’s coronary heart disease risk to recommending appropriate treatment according to risk category and baseline LDL cholesterol level in the new guidelines.
Because it is part of the educational activities of the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (National Institutes of Health), the program is free, and may be freely distributed without further permission. Please refer to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute as the source.
