This update is designed for use on Palm III™ connected organizers and for use with the Palm 2MB upgrade card installed on PalmPilot™ connected organizers. This update is not intended for use with any Palm™ connected organizer that does not have infrared hardware. Purpose The Enhanced Infrared Update allows a Palm connected organizer with infrared hardware to interact with a greater variety of other infrared-enabled devices. It is important to note that this update may not be useful for most users, however, it is necessary in order to use applications that have been written to take advantage of the Enhanced Infrared Update.For instance, the Enhanced Infrared Update allows interaction with infrared-equipped Ericsson cellular phones. Combined with the appropriate applications, such as HandPHONE from Smartcode Software, the following functions are enabled: Management of phone book entries stored on an Ericsson phone: Add, delete and edit entries by using an application on the Palm connected organizer and using infrared to transfer the entries to and from the Ericsson telephone. Short Message Service (SMS) functionality: Read and send SMS messages using the Palm connected organizer and an infrared-equipped Ericsson phone. Wireless modem capability: In areas with the appropriate data service (predominantly in Europe) the Ericsson phone can be used as a wireless modem to dial into network services. The Enhanced Infrared Update implements the IrCOMM protocol, which is one of the IrDA standards.
